Painting Wire Art Wood Etchings

African artwork is as varied and diverse as the people who live on the continent. Although there are many forms of artwork, it is in the paintings, etchings and wire art that the inimitable African spirit can be seen most clearly.

These paintings are a uniquely South African style, seen decorating the walls of shebeens and salons alike. With their simple figures, bold brush strokes and intense colours, they stand out of any crowd.

The wood etchings seen here are lightly carved out of burnt wood. The scenes depicted are reminiscent of rural life and the wildlife that is so abundant in Southern Africa.

Wire art is an exclusive art form created by a Zimbabwean artist using only wire and a pair of pliers. Here, he recreates his home village in Harare.
