About

Durban is a city of heat and colour, a cultural melting pot that produces some of the finest, most exciting artists and art that South Africa has to offer. With a strong Indian influence, this birthplace of the Zulus (a name which means ‘the heavens’) has an intangible vibrancy that expresses itself in the abundant forms of art.

Bought in the heart of the city, where traditional healers selling monkey skulls rub shoulders with fruit sellers on the side of the road, each of these artworks is infused with that something African that gets into your blood. Zululand, just outside Durban, is ‘a land called heaven’, and it is from here that many of the artists hail, coming into the city to sell their wares.

For much as the land may seem like heaven, it is also one of the highest HIV-AIDS infected areas, and often selling traditional artwork is the only way that those afflicted with AIDS can support their families.

At African Arts and Artists you are guaranteed a one–of–a kind, unique gift that has no known replica. Each item on this website is handcrafted, and as such each has its own individual flavour. Take a browse through the Beadwork, Sculpture, Baskets, Artwork, Quirky Gifts and African Artifacts to see which portion of South Africa you would like to take home. Every one is sure to bring colour to your life.

African Arts and Artists sister website, Siyasiza, is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing hands-on help and delight to AIDS orphans. Please visit them at www.siyasiza.co.za
